Rant: a loose cannon plug cost me 9 hours in Wichita
Last Tuesday I was doing a pitot static check on a King Air in Wichita and the left pitot heat kept failing my continuity test. I pulled the cannon plug apart at the wing root and found a pushed pin that was making contact maybe 50 percent of the time. How do you all keep these plugs from getting water in them, dielectric grease or something else?
There is a good writeup from a Beechcraft shop guy I read a while back about this. He said the pins get pushed back when guys jam the connector together without lining up the keyway, so the pin never seats in the socket. Then it arcs a little every time and burns up. His fix was to put a light coat of DC4 on the seal only, not on the pins themselves. Grease on the pins just holds dirt and crud.
