Overheard a guy at the Orlando avionics conference say he never uses a schematic to trace faults, just pokes wires until something sparks

He said he's been doing it 15 years and never had a fire, but I can't help wondering how many boards he's fried or how many hours of troubleshooting he's wasted compared to just pulling up the pinout, anyone else run into techs who refuse to read drawings?

... and this guy works on avionics? Like stuff that keeps planes in the air? I've heard of "poke and hope" troubleshooting but doing it for 15 years without a fire is just pure luck and not skill. He's definitely fried a bunch of boards, he just doesn't know it because maybe they still kinda work after he's done jamming a probe in there blind. I can't imagine how many hours he's wasted chasing ghosts that would have been a 5 minute fix with a schematic. Honestly this makes me wonder if he's got some kind of superpower or if the FAA is just asleep at the wheel.

Fifteen years without a fire is just dumb luck, not skill at all.
