Guy at the Tulsa hangar said to quit torqueing connector shells by feel, and I argued with him for 20 minutes before he pulled out a spec sheet
He showed me the torque table on a shelf in the back office during a lunch break 6 months ago and I have been using a wrench on every cannon plug since, so what is the one shortcut you refuse to give up even though the book says otherwise?

Checking cannon plugs by feel is exactly how you end up with a shell cracked at the crimp and a squawk that takes three days to track down, so good on you for switching. I still hand-snug AN fittings on fuel lines when I'm in a hurry, which the book would slap me for, but I've never had one weep on me either. The trick is knowing which corners bite back and which ones don't, and torque specs on connectors are one of the ones that bite. Keep the wrench in the bag, it's cheap insurance.
