Hot take: I read my extended warranty contract and found out the 'bumper to bumper' part was a lie
I bought a used 2019 Civic in Sacramento last spring and paid $1,850 for the dealer's extended warranty because the finance guy swore it covered everything except tires and brakes. Last week my backup camera died and the quote was $640 to fix it, so I called the warranty company expecting to be covered. The lady on the phone said cameras fall under 'electronics and sensors' which is a separate exclusion listed on page 9 in tiny print. I learned the hard way that 'bumper to bumper' is just a sales phrase, not a real coverage tier. Has anyone actually gotten their money back from one of these plans, or do I just eat the $1,850 and move on?
The "electronics and sensors" exclusion on page 9 is exactly how they get you. I used to figure an extended warranty was worth it just for peace of mind on a used car, since one big repair could pay for the whole thing. Then a buddy of mine went through almost the same deal with his truck and they denied him over some fine print too. After reading enough of these stories, I changed my mind and stopped buying them. That $1,850 is likely gone, but read the contract first because some plans let you cancel for a prorated refund, and you can always file a complaint with the California insurance department since these plans are regulated there. Next time just put that money in a savings account for repairs instead.
