Guy at the parts counter in Tulsa told me my 2018 Tacoma was already past the good window for an extended plan
Stopped by a shop off Route 66 in Tulsa for an oil change and the guy behind the counter mentioned that once you pass 80k miles, most extended warranty plans either cost way more or start denying the stuff you actually need. Mine just rolled over 84k so now I'm wondering if I waited too long. He said the sweet spot is usually buying before 60k if you want decent coverage on the big stuff. Has anyone here grabbed a plan this late and actually used it, or am I just lighting money on fire at this point?
84k on a Tacoma is barely broken in, but the warranty math doesn't care about that. What gets me is how this same setup shows up everywhere, the gym wants you locked in for a year when you're motivated, the airline miles expire right when you finally have time to fly, the store card has the best deal only if you sign up that day. There's always a window and it's almost always behind you. That parts guy wasn't wrong about 60k, but he was also doing what everyone in sales does, making you feel like you missed your shot so you buy whatever is left. Here's the thing though, on a truck you already own outright, the money you'd hand over for a late plan is basically your own repair fund. Set it aside, let it sit, and you're the warranty company now.
