That EZ30 timing job in my 2004 Outback taught me I was torquing head bolts wrong

I spent 3 days fighting a leaking head gasket at my buddy's shop in Boise before a retired Subaru tech looked at my torque wrench and said 'you never account for thread stretch on aluminum blocks', now I always do 3 extra passes and my last 2 jobs came out dry, has anyone else had a factory spec that just didn't hold up?
