Serious question, I switched to hand-tightening lug nuts before torquing.
I used to just zip lug nuts on with the impact, but after a few stripped studs, I changed my way. Now I hand-start each one before torquing, and I haven't had a single issue since!

After ruining a wheel stud on my Civic, I always finger-tighten now. It takes an extra minute but saves so much hassle.

Consider how finger tightening also helps the wheel settle evenly on the hub before the final torque. That little step can stop a slight vibration you might otherwise chase down the road. It's a simple habit that actually improves the whole job, not just saves the studs. More people should do this for the smooth ride alone.

Read an old shop manual that called it "snugging them down" before the final torque. Makes sense.
