Overheard a customer saying 'it's probably just a loose wire' and it made me think
Was working on a 2015 Ford Focus yesterday at the shop in Portland and this guy walks in with his car not starting, tells the front desk it's probably just a loose wire or a bad battery. I ended up spending 40 minutes diagnosing it - turned out the PCM had a cracked solder joint from heat cycling. Made me realize how often we brush off complex stuff as simple fixes. Anyone else ever have a customer's quick guess turn into a much deeper problem?

I always grab the multimeter before I even listen to a customer's guess.

Used to think I knew what the problem was from talking to them but I was wrong way more often than I expected. Now I check with the meter first too.
