My shop lead swore by impact wrenches on lug nuts, then I watched him snap a stud on a 2019 F-150
I used to crank every lug nut with a 1/2 inch impact on full power because that is what the lead tech at our shop in Boise drilled into me when I started. Last month he was doing a tire rotation on a customer truck and sheared a stud clean off, then had to eat the $85 repair himself. I switched to hand-torquing everything to spec with a torque wrench at 150 ft-lbs and my comeback rate for loose wheels dropped to zero over 4 months. The impact still gets them off, it just does not go back on. Any of you torque by hand even on flat rate, or am I just slow now?
