My old boss in Detroit told me to always replace the water pump with the timing belt, and I blew him off for years
Back when I was 19 and turning wrenches at a shop off Michigan Ave, my boss Ray told me one thing I never forgot but also never followed. He said if you are already in there for a timing belt, just do the water pump too, even if it looks fine. I ignored that advice for almost 8 years because I figured he was just trying to pad the ticket. Then a guy came back 5 months after I did his belt on a 2006 Civic with a blown pump, and it cost him $610 to redo everything plus a tow. Ray was right and it took me a comeback and a mad customer to admit it. Now I always quote both together and most people say yes once I explain it. What is the one piece of old school advice you ignored way too long?
Man, I feel this one. Mine was the "always replace the thermostat when you do a coolant flush" thing. Told myself for years it was just upsell, then watched a guy overheat on the freeway two weeks after a flush because the old stat stuck shut. Cost him a head gasket instead of a $15 part. Now I just tell people straight up: the part is cheap, the do-over is not. Most folks get it once you put it that way. Ray knew what he was talking about.
