Hot take: a dirt simple cooling system flush saved me from a head gasket job
Last month a 2009 Civic came into my bay in Mesa with the temp gauge creeping up at stoplights. The owner had already been quoted $1,800 for a head gasket somewhere else. I pulled the cap and the coolant looked like chocolate milk, so I did a $90 flush and put in a new thermostat. Two days later the gauge sat dead center and the guy nearly hugged me. I stopped trusting a pressure test alone that day, because it passed fine and the coolant was the real story. Now I want to know, how many of you pull a coolant sample before you even think about yanking a head?
