Appreciation post: a 20 year tech in Fort Wayne got me to stop using impact guns on lug nuts
I used to hit every lug nut with the impact gun out of habit, and I figured if the torque wrench clicked after, it was fine. A guy who had been turning wrenches for 20 years pulled me aside after a brake job and asked me to feel the studs on a car he had just done by hand, then showed me two stretched studs from a truck I had worked on the week before. He said "the gun doesn't know when to stop" and it stuck with me more than any class ever did. Now I run them down snug with a 3/8 ratchet and finish with the torque wrench set to spec, and it adds maybe two minutes a wheel. Curious how many of you break lugs free by hand versus reaching for the gun first.
