The shop on Route 27 in Toms River told me my brake fluid was "still good" at 80k miles
I watched the tech check nothing but the reservoir level and call it done, which makes me wonder how many people are driving around on fluid that's been in there since the Bush administration, so what's your actual interval or do you just run it till the pedal goes soft?
The "still good" line kills me because that tech probably spent more time walking to your car than actually checking anything. Checking the level in the reservoir tells you nothing about the fluid itself, since it can look fine while being full of water and dark as coffee. I used to be the guy running fluid until the pedal felt weird, and then I cooked a master cylinder on a mountain pass and paid for it. Now I just do a flush every two or three years, it's cheap and takes maybe half an hour with a buddy pumping the pedal. Brake fluid soaks up water over time no matter how few miles you drive, so mileage alone isn't the whole story. Anyone who waits for a soft pedal is basically waiting for the worst possible moment to find out.
