The 5-gallon bucket trick my neighbor showed me at the car wash

Last month I was at the self-serve wash in Tulsa and this older guy next to me was rinsing his engine bay with a bucket of water and a soft brush instead of the pressure wand. I asked him why and he said the wand can force water into connectors, but a bucket lets you control where it goes and you can see the dirt coming off. He also showed me how to use a cheap dish soap mix to break up grease without stripping the wax. I tried it on my 2006 Civic last weekend and the bay looks better than it has in years. Has anyone else switched to bucket washing for under the hood or do you still trust the sprayer?
