Factory oil change intervals vs severe service, which one do you actually trust?
I keep seeing people argue that following the oil life monitor in their car is fine, but my own 2016 Silverado flagged an oil change at 7,000 miles while the manual says severe service means 5,000. I ran delivery routes in Phoenix traffic for two summers and my oil analysis came back with high fuel dilution, so I switched to the shorter interval. On the flip side, my buddy does mostly highway cruising in Ohio and he goes 10,000 with full synthetic, no issues at all. The manual's severe schedule seems conservative but the monitor doesn't know about short trips, dust, or towing. My take is that most people are in severe service without realizing it, but plenty of folks here swear by the computer. You check your dipstick regularly or just trust the sticker, and has anyone actually tested both intervals side by side?
