Why does nobody talk about plastic bumper repair rods

I was at a shop in Nashville last week watching a guy fix a cracked bumper cover. Instead of using filler, he melted these plastic rods into the crack from the back side. It took him maybe 20 minutes and the thing looked solid. Has anyone else tried these rods for deep cracks or do you still stick with traditional filler?

Bought a set of those rods for my own project and they snapped clean in half during a routine rainstorm. Just shows how much the quality has dropped compared to the old ones from ten years back. The manufacturer claims they meet spec but my floor still dips every time I walk across it. Might be worth checking if the installer used the right drill bit size or if they just winged it like the guy on my street did.
