The clear coat on my neighbor's Civic went from perfect to orange peel in a single summer

I park next to it every day. In April, the hood was glass. By September, it looked like the surface of an orange. I'm talking bad, like a cheap rattle can job. The only thing that changed was he started using one of those drive-through car washes with the harsh brushes three times a week. I told him it was sanding his clear off, but he didn't listen. Has anyone else seen damage that fast from automatic washes? What's the best way to explain the risk to customers who don't get it?

Oh man, @graymiller, what exactly went wrong with it? That stuff can get so expensive to fix... I'm scared to even look at my own paint now.
