That time a shop in Tulsa tried to pass off Bondo work as a proper repair

I was helping out a buddy at his shop in Tulsa last summer and we got a car from another garage that was supposed to have a simple dent repair. But they'd just laid on a half inch of Bondo over rust and it cracked within a week. Now I always check for any weird thick spots before I accept a job from certain places. Anyone else seen this kind of hack work come through?

Honestly, the tapping trick only works if you know what a solid panel sounds like. For me, I'm the guy who would tap on it, nod like I know what I'm doing, and then take the car anyway. Last time I trusted my tapping skills I ended up with a quarter inch of Bondo hiding a hole you could put your fist through. My ear is basically useless, it just lies to me.

Shouldn't you be able to spot that kind of mess just by tapping on it?
