That customer who watched me sand for 20 minutes then asked if I was 'done yet'

Guy in a brand new Tesla pulls into my shop in Phoenix last Tuesday, wants me to buff out a scratch on his bumper, and proceeds to stand right over my shoulder the whole time. After I've been wet sanding for maybe 20 minutes, he goes 'so are you close to being done yet?' like I'm painting a room in his house. Does your customers hover like this or do I just have bad luck?

Lmao oh man, that sounds like a special kind of patience test right there. Nothing says 'I respect your craft' like hovering and asking if you're done sanding like it's a fast food order. I swear some people think we have a magic wand we just wave over their car instead of actually working. My favorite is when they watch me tape something off for 10 minutes and then ask if I'm 'almost finished' with the whole job. At that point I just want to hand them the sandpaper and say 'here you go, knock yourself out,' but then I remember I need their money lol. You definitely don't have bad luck, this is just the price of dealing with people who think body work is like making a sandwich.

How do you keep from just saying "look, I'll call you when it's done" without sounding like a total prick? I swear that's the only way I've found to keep my sanity on those jobs.
