Stopped by a body shop I used to work at in Phoenix last week
Walked in and all the techs were using those mini belt sanders for feathering instead of the old DA grinders we used to run. Made me wonder if I'm just stuck in my ways or if that really saves time on getting the metal prepped.

Those little belt sanders are great for getting into tight spots but they can gouge the hell out of a panel if you're not careful. I tried a few of them back when I was still turning wrenches and always ended up switching back to the DA for the big flat areas. The guys I know who use them full time say they save maybe ten minutes per panel once you get the hang of it. But if you're feathering a whole car, that time adds up pretty quick.

I actually read somewhere that those belt sanders cut way more consistent than DAs on the primer edge if you keep them at the right angle. One of the old timers at the NACE show was saying they're the only tool he uses now.
