PSA: I stopped using clip-on fender covers and went back to the magnetic kind

I spent 8 months trying to make the clip-on style work at my shop here in Austin because everyone online swears they stay put better. But after my third scratched hood from a clip slipping off mid-repair, I switched back to magnets and haven't had a single issue. Anybody else find that the popular choice isn't always the best for your particular setup?

Wait, are we talking about the big magnetic sheets or the little round magnets? I went through a whole phase with those clip-on things a couple years back and honestly I think they're designed for like, perfect shop conditions that don't exist in real life. One time I had a clip slide off a Honda fender and it landed right in a bucket of paint thinner. That was a fun cleanup. But now I just use painter's tape and some old towels if I'm worried about scratches. Works fine, costs nothing, and I don't have to buy another set of fancy covers.

The tape and towel method is honestly underrated. I've been doing that for years on my own truck and it works just as good as any expensive cover. The trick is just make sure the tape is clean and you're not pressing it into any dirt. Idk why people get so caught up in the whole magnetic thing, because like you said, one bump and it's gone. Plus those magnets can mess with the paint if there's any metal debris stuck to them. Painter's tape is cheap and you can toss it when it's dirty.
