My $80 air file damaged a fender, check yours before use

Picked up an air file from a pawn shop in Phoenix, saved cash over new. Ran it on a fender last Friday and the pad was uneven, left a 6 inch gouge in the clear coat. Cost me 2 hours and extra filler to fix. Anyone else had a used tool bite them like this?
