Hot take: I thought those cheap magnetic welding blankets were a total scam

I bought a $15 one off a truck at a swap meet in Toledo last fall, figured it was junk. Used it on a quarter panel job last week and the thing held tight through a full afternoon of cutting and grinding. No burn through, no shifting, and it kept the sparks off the glass like a champ. My buddy who runs a shop in Dayton said he's been using them for two years now. What other cheap tools have you guys tried that actually work?

My uncle in Akron bought one of those and it fell off his fender the first time he used an angle grinder near it. Maybe you just got lucky with a good batch. It's still just a thin sheet with magnets, not some magic shop upgrade. I'll stick with my old clips and a real blanket until I see one last more than a season.

Tell you what, I'm gonna have to eat my own words on that one. I was the guy telling everyone those blankets were just overpriced fridge magnets. Bought one as a joke to prove a point and now it's stuck to my lift. The thing works so well it's actually annoying, like I have to find a new thing to complain about in the shop.
