Trusted my buddy's star stacking advice for 2 years, finally proved him wrong
My friend Dave kept saying I had to use 30-second exposures minimum for Andromeda, no exceptions. Last month I finally tried 15-second shots on a tracker (he said they'd be useless) and got way sharper detail because the stars didn't trail at all. I stacked 120 frames instead of 60 and the result was actually cleaner than his method. Has anyone else found better results breaking "standard" rules like that?

Dave said they'd be useless" and he was totally wrong. Sometimes the "rules" are just someone's stubborn preference.

People get really worked up about what some guy named Dave said 15 years ago. It's just a tool, not a sacred text, @phoenix845. The rules aren't going to shatter if you break one, and the world keeps spinning regardless. Half the time someone calls it "wrong" they just had a bad experience or read it on a blog once.
