TIL my phone on a $12 tripod got a better shot of Saturn than my DSLR did
I set up my old Nikon on a tracker mount in the backyard in Tucson two nights ago, polar aligned and everything, and the shots came out soft and noisy. Out of frustration I just held my phone up to the eyepiece of my 8 inch dob and got a way cleaner view of the rings with the Cassini division visible. Turns out my focus was slightly off on the DSLR the whole time and the phone was nailing it by luck because I was just eyeballing it. I ended up deleting 40 bad subs and keeping one phone pic. Anyone else find their cheapest setup sometimes beats the gear they spent real money on?
