That stranger in a parking lot who pointed out the milky way core

I was out near a rest stop off I-40 in New Mexico last fall, just killing time between hauls, and had my phone propped up trying to catch a wide shot of the sky. A guy in a beat-up RV walked over and said, 'You're aiming at the dark spot, not the light streak.' He showed me how the core was actually to the left, past that cluster of stars, and waited while I re-aimed. Turned out he used to shoot astro photos for a small college newsletter back in the 80s, before digital. He talked about pushing film and guessing exposures, and I just stood there nodding. His one sentence fixed the next 20 minutes of frustration. Has anyone else had a random stranger give them a tip that totally changed how they frame a night shot?
