My first attempt at photographing the Milky Way from my backyard was a total bust.
I went out near Flagstaff last summer with my old Canon T5 and a basic tripod, thinking a 20-second exposure would be plenty. All I got was a blurry mess of star trails and a washed-out sky because I didn't account for light pollution from a nearby gas station. Turns out, stacking shorter exposures and using a light pollution filter made a huge difference on my next try. Has anyone else found that suburban light domes ruin wide-angle shots more than you'd expect?

...honestly man the gas station light pollution seems like a pretty minor thing to get worked up over. I've shot with a T5 too and you can usually pull enough detail out of a single 20 sec frame if you tweak the curves in post. Maybe the real issue is just not waiting for a darker sky in the first place.

Oh man, @noah_black probably drives a Prius and still complains about the headlights.
