Just realized stacking 40 light frames by hand took me 3 weekends and a hot pixel almost broke me
Everyone keeps saying you can just stack a bunch of frames and the noise disappears, and I'm sitting here thinking no, that is not how it went for me at all. Back in February I shot M42 from my buddy's driveway in Tucson, got 40 decent lights on a cold night, and figured I'd have a clean picture by Sunday. Three weekends later I was still fighting it. The problem was a single hot pixel that kept smearing into a little red dot every time I nudged my alignment by hand, and since I was matching stars on a laptop trackpad it drifted a few pixels each pass. I probably restacked those same 40 frames 15 times before I figured out the dot was in the same place in every single sub, which meant dark frames, which I had skipped like an idiot. Once I actually shot 20 darks the dot went away in one try, and I just sat there feeling dumb. So for the folks who shoot without a tracker or a cooled camera, how are you handling hot pixels, or do you just crop around them and move on?
