Just realized my backyard star shots were soft because of one dumb focusing habit
I was at the local astronomy club meetup in Sacramento last Tuesday and a guy named Ray asked to look at my camera screen after I showed him a stack of Orion shots. He zoomed in and goes "you're focused on the bright star, not the faint ones, huh?" and I had to admit I never thought about it that way. I've been using autofocus on the brightest point for about a year and wondering why my stars looked like little blobs. Ray's trick is to use live view at 10x on a dim star near the edge and tweak the ring by hand until it's the smallest point I can get. Took me maybe 15 minutes to redo my setup and the next night's shots were way sharper. It sounds obvious in hindsight but I just never had anyone point it out. Curious if you all focus on a bright star or a faint one, and does it really change much for you?
