I know everyone loves the Milky Way shots from Joshua Tree, but my trip to the Grand Canyon last month showed me how much light pollution has crept in.

My cousin tried to stargaze near Flagstaff last year and said the glow from Phoenix was visible on the horizon.

My friend Mark drove two hours out of Vegas to see the Milky Way. He said the city light dome looked like a permanent sunset behind him. It really kills the mood when you can't escape the glow.

That Phoenix glow comment is interesting. It makes me wonder how much worse it's gotten since Flagstaff became the world's first dark sky city. They have strict rules, but you can't control light spilling in from a hundred miles away.
