I finally got my new telescope to work after a whole night of fighting with it
Spent six hours last Saturday trying to get a clear shot of the Orion Nebula, but every picture was just a blurry mess because I forgot to take the lens cap off. My wife came outside at 3 AM, saw me staring at a black screen, and just pointed at the cap. Has anyone else had a moment that dumb when starting out?

The lens cap is a silent, patient enemy. At least your wife saved you from a second night of that.

How about spending an hour trying to focus on a star that was actually a smudge on the eyepiece?

Used to believe a clean lens was just for neat freaks. Wasted a whole evening chasing what I swore was a faint nebula. Turned out to be my own thumbprint from setting up. Now checking the eyepiece is the first thing I do when the view gets fuzzy.
