I always thought you needed a crazy expensive setup to get good shots of the Orion Nebula. A guy at the local astronomy club in Boise showed me his pictures taken with a $400 DSLR and a basic tracker, and they blew my mind.

Isn't it wild what you can do without a second mortgage? I've sunk so much money into gear only to get smoked by someone with a used camera and a lot of patience. It really is more about skill than the price tag.

Exactly, and @max388 you're hitting on something deeper. Gear just gives you more chances to mess up, while skill decides if you even take the shot. I've seen guys with cheap setups nail shots because they learned to read the light. It's not the camera, it's the person holding it.

You're right about gear giving you more chances to mess up. The real kicker is how it can trick you into thinking you've done the work. You buy the fancy lens, so you stop learning to move your feet. You rely on the camera's brain instead of building your own. It becomes a crutch that actually slows you down.
