That guy who told me to go with tankless water heater was wrong for my house
My neighbor swore I'd save money switching to a tankless unit, but after 14 months of constant maintenance calls and a $1,200 repair bill, I'm back to a traditional 50-gallon tank. Anyone else get burned by advice that sounded good but didn't fit their actual situation?

That "constant maintenance calls" part hit home for me. I rented a place with a tankless heater once and it kept throwing error codes every few months. I switched to a 40-gallon power vent model when I bought my own house and haven't touched it in two years except to flush it once. Sometimes old school is just simpler for a regular house setup.

Hit the nail on the head. That tankless kept me on my toes with error codes for the flow sensor and heat exchanger. I finally just went back to a 50-gallon conventional tank and it's been dead quiet for five years now, not counting one rusty anode rod swap. The tankless tech is cool but it feels like they over engineered something that just needs to hold hot water and stay reliable. For a regular family house with kids and dogs, simple and boring wins every single time. Give me a big steel tank with a gas burner under it any day over a finicky computer board.
