That advice about checking tire pressure in winter felt dumb until it saved me $180

A guy at a gas station near Duluth told me to drop my tires to 32 psi when it hit freezing temps. I thought he was messing with me. Two weeks later I hit a pothole on Highway 2 and the sidewall bubbled. Shop said a lower pressure would have absorbed it better. Cost me $180 for a new tire. Has anyone else gotten weird roadside tips that actually worked or backfired?
