Ran into my old landlord at the grocery store, 8 years later

I was grabbing coffee at the Kroger on 5th last Tuesday and this older guy starts chatting me up about the produce. It took me a minute but it was Mr. Alvarez, the guy who rented me my first apartment out of high school. He remembered I always paid rent two days early with a money order, said he'd never had a tenant do that since. We stood by the oranges for like 20 minutes catching up on his grandkids and my cleaning business. Has anyone else had a random run-in that made them weirdly emotional over a person they barely think about anymore?

The part where he remembered you always paid two days early with a money order got me. Like, that's such a small thing but it clearly mattered to him, and it's wild how people hold onto those little details without you ever knowing. It makes me think we walk past dozens of mini-relationships like that every day, people who remember us in ways we'd never guess. Maybe we're all storing these tiny memories of each other without realizing it, and once in a while one of them surfaces and it just hits different. It's not about the person themselves, it's like proof that we actually existed in someone else's story, even a boring one about rent and produce.
