Bet it was just some boomer "back in my day" thing that people act like is deep wisdom. Probably just told you to buy once cry once or some other tool aisle fortune cookie.

Alright, I used to roll my eyes at that kind of stuff too. But my old neighbor, a guy who fixed lawnmowers out of his garage for 40 years, once told me "the cheapest tool is the one you buy twice" and it hit me different after I bought a $20 socket set that rounded off every bolt I touched. Spent the next weekend chasing down the right size again anyway, ended up paying triple in the long run.
