Is tipping culture actually broken or are we just bad at math?
My friend and I got into it last night after a $38 dinner where the tablet suggested a 30% tip. He says auto prompts are pushing people to overpay and the whole system needs to go. I think the real issue is folks not realizing the suggested amounts are post tax, so they feel guilted into hitting the big button. We both grew up on 15% being standard, but now 20% is the floor and nobody talks about how wages haven't caught up in my state. So which is it, are we getting ripped off by the prompts or are people just not doing the quick math in their heads?
