PSA: Rented a 12-foot jib for a sunset shoot in Sedona and got the worst lens flare of my life

I thought the golden hour light would look amazing but the flare totally ruined half my shots. Anyone else deal with unexpected sun angles causing issues on outdoor shoots?

Wait you rented a 12 foot jib and didnt test the sun angle first?? Thats crazy to me. I always do a quick run through with my phone camera to see where the flare hits before I even roll. Sedona sun is no joke it bounces off those red rocks like a mirror. I had a shoot last fall and the flare was so bad it looked like I was filming through a dirty fish tank. Did you try a matte box or just raw dog the lens?

Man thats wild cause I actually had a similar thing happen but with a completely different setup. I was shooting in this park near my house and thought Id be smart and bring a cheap polarizer filter I found on Amazon. Big mistake. The thing was so dark I couldnt see anything on the monitor and the footage came out looking like a bad instagram filter from 2012. Took me an hour to fix in post and still looked off. To answer your question I raw dogged the lens cause I forgot my matte box at home. Honestly the flare was kinda cool in some shots like a happy accident but the client hated it. Next time Im just gonna use my hand as a shade like a caveman.
