Pro tip: Strap your shotgun mic to a painter's pole for quick boom work

I tried this on a desert shoot near Sedona last month when my boom pole snapped and the painter's pole from Home Depot actually held up better in the wind, has anyone else found a weird workaround for outdoor audio gear?

Quick boom work" - more like quick "boom I broke my gear" work am I right? Seriously though I've done the painter's pole trick for years now and it's honestly saved my butt more times than I can count. My absolute favorite weird workaround is using those big heavy duty binder clips to attach a lav mic to the inside of someone's collar, works way better than the sticky tape that always falls off when people get sweaty. I once used a rolled up sock and some zip ties to make a makeshift deadcat when my real one blew away in the wind, looked ridiculous but the audio actually came out cleaner than my actual gear. The desert is brutal on equipment so I've learned to keep a roll of gaffer's tape and a Leatherman in my bag at all times for emergency repairs. Honestly half my "professional" kit is just hardware store stuff with better branding.
