The way people keep calling Native American mounds just "dirt piles" finally got to me after a trip to Cahokia last month
I used to think the same thing until I stood next to Monks Mound and realized it covers 14 acres and was built by hand basket by basket, and now every time someone says that I just ask them how long it takes to haul that much dirt without any machinery.

And then you realize they moved all that dirt without wheels or metal tools, just people and baskets and sheer stubbornness. Really makes you think twice about what "primitive" actually means.
