The pottery shards at Mesa Verde changed how I see old dig sites
I drove out to Mesa Verde last month and noticed something weird at the Clif Palace overlook. Most tourists were staring at the big structures, but I spotted a small exposed cut where recent rain had washed out a layer of broken pottery and bone fragments. The park ranger told me they leave those erosion cuts alone on purpose, since digging them would destroy the context. It made me wonder how many casual visitors miss these little clues that are right in front of them. Has anyone else seen exposed layers at a site that made you rethink what you were looking at?

Most erosion cuts just show random trash layers, not much real context to learn from.
