Spent 3 years digging test pits wrong until a retired guy pointed it out
I was on a field school back in 2019 and this old timer walks over, watches me for like 5 minutes. He says "son, you're scraping away the fill before you even look at the stratigraphy." I had been just digging down without paying attention to soil layers. Total facepalm moment. Anyone else have a basic skill they messed up for years before someone corrected them?

Used to think you just dig straight down and call it a day. Watched a few YouTube videos early on that made it look simple, so I figured I had it figured out. Then a contractor walked my site and pointed out how I was missing all the subtle color changes in the soil. Felt pretty dumb, but once I started paying attention to the layers, everything made way more sense. It's amazing how much you can miss when you're not looking for it. Definitely changed my whole approach to groundwork.
