Picked surface survey over excavation for my dig site in New Mexico

Had to choose between test pits or surface mapping for this newly reported site near Chaco Canyon. I went with surface survey because the landowner only gave us 4 days access and we found 30 sherds plus a broken metate just walking lines. Anyone else ever skipped digging and gone straight to surface collection? Curious if you got more data that way or regretted missing the stratigraphy.
