I used to think the whole 'lost city in the Amazon' thing was just a story

I saw a documentary a few months back that showed those new lidar scans from Bolivia... they found over 20 settlements hidden under the jungle canopy. The images showed clear pyramids and road networks. That hard data from the tech finally convinced me it wasn't just legend. Has anyone else been surprised by how much lidar is changing the field?

It's amazing how much lidar has changed things. I had a similar moment watching a show about Angkor Wat, and @paul_burns is right that details matter, but the tech itself is just mind blowing. Seeing those hidden shapes pop up makes the past feel so much more real.

Got to point out it was actually in Brazil, not Bolivia. The documentary probably mixed it up. Those lidar scans are wild though, completely rewriting the history books.

Typical documentary, can't even get the continent right.
