Field notes beat drone photos every time for site mapping

I spent last summer on a dig near Santa Fe and we had two teams documenting the same trench. One team used a fancy drone with photogrammetry software, the other just used gridded paper notes and a measuring tape. The drone data took 3 days to process and still missed the subtle soil color changes that marked an old hearth. The hand-drawn notes caught it in 20 minutes because someone actually looked at the dirt close up. We ended up using the sketches for the final report and the drone images just for the intro slide. Has anyone else found that the low tech approach wins when you need detail over pretty pictures?
