Dropped $200 on a ground-penetrating radar rental to find buried foundation walls on my property in Vermont and all I got was a bunch of utility lines I already knew about
The guy at the rental place swore it would pick up old stone foundations from the 1800s but after six hours of dragging it around my field I just found modern water pipes and fiber optic cable, has anyone actually had luck with these things for historical stuff or did I just get sold a fancy metal detector?

Ha, a buddy of mine tried that and just found an old septic tank.

Did your buddy even bother to check property records first? Old septic tanks are a classic sign someone already dug there without telling anyone. At least it wasn't a buried car or something worse. Still, that's a solid reminder to map out what's under your land before you start digging.
