A tour guide in Luxor changed my mind about reconstructed artifacts

I used to think museums should only display original pieces, nothing glued back together. Last month in Luxor, a guide pointed out that a reconstructed statue tells us more about how it was used than a pile of broken bits ever could. He showed me a rebuilt temple column and walked me through how the joins match tool marks, which you can't see in an untouched ruin. That conversation made me realize we lose context when we hide the repair work. Sure, some reconstructions go too far, but dismissing all of them ignores real evidence. Has anyone else shifted their view on restored sites after seeing one in person?

Hang on, you actually climbed around a rebuilt temple column and could see the tool marks matching up? That's wild. I honestly never thought about it that way, but now I'm picturing all those museum pieces I've walked past and completely ignored.
