A stranger in the museum gift shop corrected my map reading and I'm still thinking about it
I was staring at this replica of a Roman road map at the state museum in Boise, totally lost because the scale was off. A older guy next to me pointed at the legend and said, 'They didn't care about distance back then, they cared about order of stops.' He showed me how the roads were drawn to show travel time by foot, not miles. It clicked for me that ancient maps were more like instructions than measurements. Has anyone else had a simple correction from a random person change how you look at an artifact?
