Why does nobody talk about black walnut toxicity when planting near fences?

I planted three black walnuts along my back property line in Ohio about 8 years ago, and last spring the neighbors' tomato patch just wilted within 3 feet of the fence. The juglone in the roots has spread way further than I expected, and now I'm wondering if I should have gone with a different tree species altogether. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a way to keep both trees and gardens happy on a small lot?

Three feet is nothing, I read juglone can stretch 50 feet and that totally changed my planting plans.
