Why did it take me 4 hours to figure out a pruning cut was killing the tree
Client in Reno had a maple with a big dead section and I kept cutting the deadwood back. Came out 6 weeks later and the dieback had spread way past where I cut. Turned out I was cutting into the branch collar on every cut, so the tree couldn't seal anything off. Any of you got a trick for finding the collar fast when the bark is thick?
Cutting the collar is not always the killer people make it out to be, plenty of old timers flush cut everything and their trees live just fine. Thick bark makes the collar hard to see but you can feel the ridge with your thumb before you ever pull the saw out. Maybe the real problem in Reno was the maple was already too far gone and the cuts just got the blame.
